Privacy
“Float Mute” mutes and unmutes your Mac's microphone. It never records, listens to or stores sound. The program has no servers, no accounts, no telemetry, no analytics and no ads. It contains no code that connects to the network, and it collects nothing about you. This website is separate from the app. The statements above (“no analytics”, “collects nothing”) describe the app, not this website.
The microphone
- The app changes the mute state of the microphone through the system audio interface (CoreAudio). This is control, not capture: the app does not receive any audio.
- For this reason it does not ask macOS for permission to use the microphone, and it cannot hear you.
- If the microphone does not offer a mute switch, the app sets its input volume to zero instead. This also does not give the app any audio.
What the app stores
- Your settings: the microphone you picked, the shortcut and its mode, the position and opacity of the widget, the language, the theme, and whether to launch at login.
- Everything is kept in the app's preferences file on your Mac. Nothing is copied anywhere else. To delete it, uninstall the application and remove its preferences file from
~/Library/Preferences.
What the app does not do
- It does not connect to the internet, so no data about you or your Mac is sent to the author or to anyone else.
- It does not read your files, contacts, camera or screen content.
- It does not include analytics or crash-reporting code or any third-party SDK. If you allowed macOS to share analytics with developers, Apple handles that itself, outside the app.
Things that look like network use but are not
- Links in the app (for example, the support page or the optional tip link in the direct download) open in your own browser, and only when you click them. The app itself sends nothing.
Children
The app is not directed at children and collects no data from anyone, including children.
The website
The website is static and has no accounts and no ads. In your browser it remembers only the language and the theme you picked (local storage on your device; nothing is sent).
The website uses Yandex Metrica, a visit-statistics service. It sets cookies and receives your IP address and technical data about your visit, such as the pages you open and the links you follow. We use it only to count visits and to see which pages are useful. The data is not sold and is not linked to the app: the app sends nothing to anyone. You can block Metrica with a content blocker or the privacy settings of your browser, and the site works the same without it. Yandex processes this data under its own privacy policy.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version appears on this page.
